Happiness Practice - April 19, 2019

It's time for what's making us happy this week!

In obvious news, I'm very happy about having a long weekend! Somehow three days are so much more valuable than two, and it makes it so much more possible to truly relax and get work off my mind but also get things done around my house and just generally feel better. I can't sleep in much at all these days, so three days in a row of sleeping until around 8 AM will probably help me kick some of this fatigue, and I'll have time to get lots of working out in over the whole weekend. I can kind of make a plan, or even better, not do anything for a few days at a time, and I'm really happy about that.
Next up, some of you will already have heard me talk about Educated, by Tara Westover, but I finished it last weekend and it was definitely one of the best things I've read in a while. It's a story about a woman who was born to religious fundamentalists, off the grid, who didn't have a birth certificate and was …

It's time for what's making us happy this week!

I have finally gotten into the home stretch of Persona 5, a JRPG I have probably been playing for a century.  I'm having a lot of fun with it! True, the dungeons are like 10% of the appeal, and all I'm really playing is a Japanese high school student simulator, but it's a lot of fun. It takes a long time and can be slow going, but I'm nearing the end and I'm glad I've played through it. Plus, it's a weirdly realistic depiction of Tokyo, so it's kind of fun to see subway lines and neighbourhoods I was in not that long ago. I'm looking forward to finishing it soon!
I'm a little surprised to realize I don't think I've written about this one before, but have I ever dragged you to Gyu-Kaku? It's a Japanese restaurant a couple blocks away from my office, and it brings me a lot of joy. This week I didn't feel like eating the lunch I brought, so I walked over and had a happy hour l…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!

I know I'm a little behind the times, but I'm almost all the way through Marie Kondo's Netflix show, and I've been enjoying it a lot. Not enough to actually tidy up my house OR declutter, but it's a soothing thing to watch, and she might be the most adorable person on television. The space transformations are nice, and while some of the families are a little odd, generally the people on the show just seem earnest and kind and it's all very wholesome. It's been a nice thing to decompress with, and a good reminder of how heavy stuff can be.
The other thing making me happy this week is just sleep! I'm still working a lot, and I think I'm fighting a bit of a bug, so I've been sleeping a lot, and it's been really helpful. I'm really looking forward to the long weekend, when I can really sleep in a couple of times, but I'm doing fairly well with my bedtimes lately, and I'm getti…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
First up is Jacqueline Carey's new book, Starless. I read it over the weekend and I enjoyed every minute of it! I can't remember the last time something swept me up so quickly and completely - I stayed up too late reading it Friday night! I find I have a difficult time deciding how to rate books like this - it's maybe not even my favourite of hers - but she did a great job with the world building and the story was interesting and compelling enough that I really just wanted to languish with it. While the story was a little straightforward, sitting down with it all weekend was an absolute joy, and I guess that's about as good as it can get. Supposedly it's a one-shot, which I both appreciate a lot and am a little sad about, but it is just a reminder that she's a really great writer, and that she makes really wonderful stories! I really hope she does end up putting out that new Kushiel's Dart re-write..…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!

Something that's been making me happy this week, and many other weeks, and really for years already, is this roasted broccoli sandwich! You guys, it's just so good? So, so good. I know it sounds stupid but really, just trust me. Just make the stupid sandwich, and then marvel at how good it is. I first made it a couple of years ago, and actually blogged about it because it was so good, and now I make it once a month or so on average. It's fairly straight forward and I frequently have everything I need on hand, or I'll just need to buy a bun, so often when I've had a long day or a rough week I'll whip it up and then savour the sandwich made out of broccoli. I know it's weird. Just try it. I delight in it and in sharing it, and have forced many people to eat them with a so far 100% conversion rate. Broccoli. It's what we make sandwiches out of now.
The other thing making me happy this week is Miss F…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
This week, what's making me happy is... what's making me happy! (The first rule of tautology club...) On a couple of my days off, I finally finished back posting all of these posts to my blog, and it was fun going through all of the posts again and seeing what I was feeling throughout the year. It's been a full year since I started, now, so there were lots to look at, and lots of interesting observations both on my part and yours. In spite of the fact that things were fairly tough overall, and that I had a couple of really down moments, I found a lot of things that brought me happiness, and I think that writing these posts every single week has helped me to cultivate a better, more positive mindset. And sometimes I end up trying new things just in the hope of finding stuff to post about, which is also not a bad approach. And of course, it's always wonderful to see what's making everyone else happy! Whether o…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
This week, seeing as it's the very close of 2018, I'm super into the year-end roundups all around. I always love me a year-end list, and while I feel like they're getting harder and harder to find, there are still quite a few around. Spotify put out their own stats on what I listened to in 2018, and I've been enjoying that a lot, and Kotaku has written a bunch of articles and published best of lists from several of their writers. Polygon's got some good game coverage, and a bit on books, too, and I'm still referring back to NPR's book concierge for new reads all the time. Pop Culture Happy Hour, the genesis of these very posts, put out an episode of their favourite things in 2018 that I really enjoyed! And Buzzfeed hasn't had as much as usual, but I like a lot of their stuff looking forward - things to try in 2019. Sadly none of my regular food blogs have put out any roundups this year, but Bon A…
