Happiness Practice - March 30, 2018

[This is a post written to catch up blog posts with historical posts before I set up the blog! I'll also be adding tags so it's easier to find old subjects.]

It's time for what's making us happy this week! (a day off from work totally counts, if you have it!) This week, I've happened on a few pieces of writing that really caught me up. Buzzfeed is doing a series called Unpacking (https://www.buzzfeed.com/unpacking) that has been really interesting and good. This essay, in particular, didn't make me happy, but did make me think about my privilege and what travel actually means. It's stuck with me and made some important points that I think will come into play when I next plan a trip: https://www.buzzfeed.com/…/gap-year-egypt-revolution-travel… This essay, too, was a really good read that gave me a sense of how different travel can be for other folks, and gave me even more to think about. https://www.buzzfeed.com/…/i-wanted-to-love-paris-but-it-di… The whole …

What's making you happy this week? I've started playing the Sims again, and man do I love that game. I try not to think too hard about how many hours I've played it for in total, because I could probably have another degree instead, but I have enjoyed it for almost two decades now, and the latest iteration is pretty fun. I'm not sure if it's the linear relationship between work & achievement (bad things don't really happen to Sims, unless you want them to), or just the weirdly rewarding fun of micromanaging every detail, but I keep coming back to it, and it's been making me pretty happy the past few weeks! The other thing making me happy this week is NPR Music's coverage of SXSW. The Austin 100, intro, and wrap-up shows are all great this year, but in particular I love the late night di…

What's making you happy this week? Episode Two of Cool Ghosts has posted, and it's as weird and wild and delightful as Episode One - maybe more so actually! These guys crack me up, but also managed to talk about some really interesting and insightful stuff, and I really enjoyed this episode. This is a show about Video Games, though, so if that's not your jam it might not be for you! If it is, you should check them out! Another thing making me happy this week is that I think I have nailed down my new D&D character's accent. She's a half-orc paladin who speaks with a hoity-toity British accent that would probably be flat-out offensive to any actual Englishperson, but fortunately there's no one to be bothered at our table! It's a silly thing, but I had fun figuring out what I wanted her to sou…

What's making you happy this week? I've been playing through Season 2 of Pandemic Legacy and having such a good time with it! The game has its flaws and weird moments, but overall it's just been really, really fun. I'm also realizing that I am happy about having a mostly-flexible excuse to drag a couple of my friends over on a regular basis, and I'm starting to think about what legacy game to play next! There's also this song, which I found on the Austin 100 last week, and which I'm not even sure I *like* but I cannot stop listening to it over and over obsessively. It's very, very catchy and I keep seeking it out, so give it a listen if you want!

What's making you happy this week? For me, it's Smitten Kitchen, a food blog I've been following pretty religiously for probably a decade already. I own both of her cookbooks and cook from her recipes frequently - I've already posted one of her recipes here! I made one of her recipes for dinner last week, for a snack last night, and will make another for dinner again tonight. I couldn't pick a single recipe to link here, so I'll post a comment with a few selections! Another thing that's making me happy this week is the Austin 100, which is NPR Music's selection of songs from the South by Southwest catalogue. Every year, they pick out the acts they're most interested and compile them in a playlist for listeners to enjoy. I've given this year's a listen already, and it's prett…
