Happiness Practice - August 31, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week! There's a lot going on this week! Fortunately, it's generally positive: things are good and getting and feeling better, and I'm really glad. It feels like a lot of my hard work (and maybe even some of my suffering!) is finally paying off, and things are coming together a little bit. I hope it keeps feeling this way for a while! So, the first thing that's making me happy this week is that I quit my job! I'm officially unemployed. Normally I'm not so sure that would be making me happy - and there's definitely some fear and anxiety laced in there still - but this is a change I had been dying to make for months. I remember deciding in February that I wanted to be out of there by August, and even though I gave two weeks' notice on Monday my office decided to send me home this week, so I unexpectedly got to keep my promise to myself, which feels like a positive sign on top of everything else. Happiness Practice - August 24, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week! 
This article, "It Feels Like a Derangement", didn't exactly make me happy but I've been thinking about it all week. It's about depression and menopause, and it's really interesting and evocative. It gave me a better sense of understanding of both my own struggles, and some of the things I've heard other people talk about. It's also the first thing that's ever really made me feel apprehensive about menopause, and that's something that's coming for me and roughly half the people in my life. I didn't know it could cause depression like this, let alone the fog and confusion, and it's scary to think about. I found it a really good read about pain, depression, and menopause, and I'd recommend it to everyone.

Happiness Practice - August 17, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week! 
I had a big weight lifted yesterday, and I'm feeling grateful and relieved and good, which is a nice feeling to carry forward right now. That boulder being gone also means a lot of new avenues are going to be available to me now, which means big choices and a lot of work to make the changes I've been dreaming about for months already. Finally having those avenues open is a huge relief, though, and a big step forward. I'm trying to hold the relief for a few minutes before I get to work. 
A brighter thing that's making me happy this week is August produce! I bought a bunch of peaches and blueberries on the weekend, and I've been snacking on them all week, they're so good! I have fresh corn in my fridge and pickling cucumbers to make a plan for, and I'm already thinking about what I might be able to get at the farmer's market tomorrow. It's such a yummy time of year!

Happiness Practice - August 10, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week! 
First up, I've been listening to You Must Remember This. It's a really interesting deep dive on Hollywood history, and the way the episodes are written are really rewarding. I'm actually not crazy about the current season, which is basically talking about a lot of Hollywood gossip from the 1920s or so, but earlier seasons definitely caught my attention. The ones on Charles Manson and the Dead Blondes series were both really good, and I should go back to the Blacklist episodes at some point. I really like Karina Longworth's narration and she has a great way for working anecdotes you might already know in to the story, sometimes clearing them up or adding new details. It's really interesting stuff!

Happiness Practice - August 3, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
This may be the smallest, silliest thing I've talked about so far, but one thing that's really been making me happy this week is that I changed my phone background! It had been the same picture of the Toronto skyline at night, taken while I was waiting for a ferry, since I took the photo in December 2014 or so. It was a nice picture, but it was kind of dark, and this week I changed it to a bright, blue photo I took of Vancouver from the Spirit Trail last week. I also cleaned up a bunch of the apps on my homescreen, and the result is that every time I looked at my phone the pop of colour and the change made me smile. Since I probably look at my phone a hundred times a day, it was pretty rewarding! I know this is something with diminishing returns, and it's already starting to wear off, but the change was nice and it definitely improved my mood a little this week.
