Happiness Practice - August 10, 2018
It's time for what's making us happy this week!
First up, I've been listening to You Must Remember This. It's a really interesting deep dive on Hollywood history, and the way the episodes are written are really rewarding. I'm actually not crazy about the current season, which is basically talking about a lot of Hollywood gossip from the 1920s or so, but earlier seasons definitely caught my attention. The ones on Charles Manson and the Dead Blondes series were both really good, and I should go back to the Blacklist episodes at some point. I really like Karina Longworth's narration and she has a great way for working anecdotes you might already know in to the story, sometimes clearing them up or adding new details. It's really interesting stuff!
Another thing making me happy this week is that I set up this website to archive these posts! There's a bunch of reasons for all of this, but one of the big ones is that I sometimes think about submitting a pitch to some freelance stuff, but I haven't really got much of a portfolio or central home for my musings. When I realized I've been writing these posts once a week for the past eight months, and that I've generated a lot of words in their service, I thought maybe it was time to aggregate these somewhere I can point people who aren't on my friends list. I have some work to do yet migrating the archives, but I'm also adding tags, so if you're looking for something I posted in the past you'll be able to check there for TV or a recipe or what have you. (Sadly I don't think there's a good way to migrate comments, so if you vaguely remember something someone else posted you still have to click through all of my posts on facebook!) I'd been noodling on that kind of idea for a while, and I really like the idea of practicing happiness - both because as an accountant, my work is referred to as a practice, and because I think for me happiness is a skill I need to cultivate. It doesn't just happen. That thought will probably end up as a post on over there sometime, but it's an underlying reason for these posts overall - I find it important and valuable to remind myself to look for something good every week, and I'm glad to be able to share them with you. I'm especially glad when people want to share their thoughts, too, which brings me to the same thing I want to know every week:
What's making you happy this week?
