Happiness Practice - September 14, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week!

First up is one of my oldest joys and most favourite things: I've been reading a lot this week, and since the weather has turned I've been cuddled up with tea and my book and sometimes even a cat and it's exactly the thing I always wanted for myself, and it's wonderful. There's nothing quite like feeling cozy with a good book in your lap, and somehow having the cat voluntarily jump up to join me is kind of reinforcing how pleasant it is. Also contributing to my happiness is the stuff I have been reading this week:
- Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, which is quite good but not nearly as excellent as Uprooted was, so go read that if you haven't
- The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, which was really good and fun and sweet but also racy, and was so good that it's basically all I could bring myself to think about all weekend
- A Court of Frost & Starlight by Sarah J Maas, which was basically fanfic written by the main trilogy's author, and I enjoyed it even if it wasn't much good
Here's hoping for the weather to stay like this for a little while so I can get even more reading done this weekend.

Another thing making me happy this week is the Fringe! I've been volunteering there almost every year since 2010, and I always enjoy it. I've made it to two shows this year (Forget-Me-Not and Wastelands, both were pretty good!) and I don't know if I'll get the chance to see many more, but I'm not even sure it matters to me; a big part of what I enjoy about it is just the volunteer experience. It's a fun crowd of cool people, it's nice to have a distinct, obvious task to do that I don't really have to stress about, and it makes me feel tangibly useful in a way I didn't get at my old job very much, so it's pretty rewarding. I look forward to it every year, and I'm a little proud of my collection of Fringe shirts. It's going on until the 16th, so if you have some time to kill this weekend, why don't you come down to Granville Island to see some cheap, weird theatre?

And now, what about you? What's making you happy this week?
