Happiness Practice - October 26, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
I've been in a more positive mood for the last couple of weeks, and it's been nice. I don't really understand what's causing it - nothing has really changed! - but in the last couple of weeks my brain has suddenly rounded a corner and now I feel generally better about everything. I'd like to figure out the root, so I can replicate it, but I'm also just trying to enjoy this (possibly) brief respite from worry and general negativity. I hope I can keep it going!
This week, I finished Robert Galbraith/JK Rowling's new book, Lethal White, which is the fourth in the mystery series she's been working on for several years. I spent a good chunk of my weekend reading it, and I really enjoyed it. It's a bit clunky, though no more so than the rest of the series, and while it's really long, I didn't feel like it dragged on, because I like the characters and the world she's built enough to want…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
I spent last weekend volunteering at SHUX 2018, a board games convention put on by Shut Up & Sit Down, and I had an absolute blast! It was a tonne of hard work and I loved every minute of it. I actually barely had the chance to play any games, but the atmosphere is so fun and welcoming and everyone was so wonderful to work with that it didn't really matter - I had a great time even though I was working my butt off all weekend. I got to catch up with some friends I hadn't seen in a while, make lots of new friends, and contribute to something I think was a really spectacular event. I'm really proud of the show and the work I got to do there, and the work that goes into cultivating an inclusive space. The Code of Conduct is detailed and extensive, posted everywhere, and conflicts are taken seriously. I'm happy to get to be part of an event that actually works towards inclusion and creating safe spaces. It's …

Practicing Happiness - October 15, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week! I went to the Shameful Tiki Room for drinks on Tuesday, and as ever, it was a blast. They make great food, delicious drinks, and the atmosphere is just really entertaining! It's a joy to introduce new people to it, and the bowls they have available make for a bit of a spectacle so it's kind of an experience! It is fairly busy (even on a Tuesday!) and not cheap, so it's kind of an adventure you need to plan for, but I had a good time this week, and I'm glad it's somewhere I can get to as often as I like! In other, cheap-as-free, read at your desk news, I'm a really big fan of Captain Awkward, an advice blog that I've been reading pretty regularly for the past couple of years now. Her advice usually boils down to some variation on "talk about it, also try some therapy", which I think is probably a sound way of dealing with about 90% of problems, even when it feels hard and scary. Her writing i…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
First up is something I'm very excited about and very proud of: I am finally, finally allowed to call myself a CPA! This is the culmination of five years of work, more studying than I ever thought I'd do, and a lot of pain and frustration and stress and drama, and I'm so, so happy to have finally finished the process. Naturally, the first place they let me see it was on a bill with my admission fees, but seeing it in writing was something else. I cried several times that day, and I still keep coming back to it with a joyous sense of disbelief - I've had an unusual number of trials in this process, and until I got to see it in writing I was waiting for some other thing to go wrong. Now it's really real: Victoria Squire, CPA. Those three letters cost a lot of time, energy, and money, and they're something I get to carry with me for a long time. I'm thrilled that I can finally use them! It's a huge go…
