Happiness Practice - October 19, 2018
It's time for what's making us happy this week!
I spent last weekend volunteering at SHUX 2018, a board games convention put on by Shut Up & Sit Down, and I had an absolute blast! It was a tonne of hard work and I loved every minute of it. I actually barely had the chance to play any games, but the atmosphere is so fun and welcoming and everyone was so wonderful to work with that it didn't really matter - I had a great time even though I was working my butt off all weekend. I got to catch up with some friends I hadn't seen in a while, make lots of new friends, and contribute to something I think was a really spectacular event. I'm really proud of the show and the work I got to do there, and the work that goes into cultivating an inclusive space. The Code of Conduct is detailed and extensive, posted everywhere, and conflicts are taken seriously. I'm happy to get to be part of an event that actually works towards inclusion and creating safe spaces. It's a really great event, I spent the whole weekend with a huge smile on my face, and while my sleeping patterns are going to be paying for it for a while, I think it was completely worth it!
The other thing making me happy this week, believe it or not, is the Charmed reboot! I watched the pilot earlier this week and I really, really enjoyed it. I loved the original Charmed when I was a kid, and I don't really know how well it would hold up, so a reboot feels like an okay thing to try. So far I'm happy with it! It was cheesy and over-the-top and very feminist and a little clunky but honestly, I giggled along with it in multiple places. And the pilot at least was prominently filmed at UBC, so I was delighted to see the gorgeous backdrop of the Chemistry building again. I don't know if the season will hold up or if UBC will show up again, but for now the pilot brought me a lot of joy, and I'm eager to watch the next one!
And now, what about you? What's making you happy this week?
