Happiness Practice - December 28, 2018

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
This week, seeing as it's the very close of 2018, I'm super into the year-end roundups all around. I always love me a year-end list, and while I feel like they're getting harder and harder to find, there are still quite a few around. Spotify put out their own stats on what I listened to in 2018, and I've been enjoying that a lot, and Kotaku has written a bunch of articles and published best of lists from several of their writers. Polygon's got some good game coverage, and a bit on books, too, and I'm still referring back to NPR's book concierge for new reads all the time. Pop Culture Happy Hour, the genesis of these very posts, put out an episode of their favourite things in 2018 that I really enjoyed! And Buzzfeed hasn't had as much as usual, but I like a lot of their stuff looking forward - things to try in 2019. Sadly none of my regular food blogs have put out any roundups this year, but Bon A…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
First up is something folks who don't own uteruses probably won't be all that interested in, and some folks who do won't either, but that's okay, you can skip ahead if you like! "Happy" isn't really the word for how my menstrual cup makes me feel, but it has definitely made my uterus owning life easier. I have a Diva Cup that I've been using for a few years already, and GOD it's the best period product I have ever used. It can go 12 hours without being reset, which makes it great for travelling, and leaks are much, much rarer than they used to be. They're also fairly cost-effective and cut down hugely on packaging and waste - I can't remember the last time I bought a box of tampons, and combined with a couple of pairs of THINX underwear I can get through my entire cycle without putting anything at all in the garbage. I know I was really nervous about trying one until I talked to a fr…

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
I'm not really a Christmas person. A lot of my friends love Christmas, love decorating, love the entire season and get really excited for it, but it's just not me. I'm not exactly a Scrooge-type, I just don't really get into the spirit very easily. The past couple of years, I've been trying to let myself feel it a little more, and while I'm not really making huge strides, I have at least finally found a Christmas album I actually really like: Sia's Everyday is Christmas. It came out last year, and there's a new version with a couple more songs out now, and I just really like it. It's catchy and pop-y and fun, and they're all new songs rather than covers. It's just a really fun album and it's definitely helping me to find a little more of the Christmas spirit every time I listen.
Next up is a tried and true December fave; NPR's book concierge! It's a gorgeous collection of …

It's time for what's making us happy this week!
Between the nice weather this week and the time I spent in Japan at the end of November, I'm remembering how much I like to walk. I spent most of every day in Japan on my feet, just exploring areas and wandering around Tokyo and going for walks to see what I could turn up, and it was such a good reminder of how happy walking makes me. It always helps me to relax and pick through anything that's on my mind, and it definitely has some knock-on effects to my mood carrying forward - I've noticed that when I'm moving more, my mood is better overall, and walking alone can be enough to accomplish that. I try to make a point of getting out of my office at lunch every day, even if it's just for a few minutes around the block, and I look for places I can get a little more time in when I can. It's really worth it for me and I feel a lot better when I do, and I need to make it more of a priority.
Another thing maki…
