Happiness Practice - January 18, 2019
It's time for what's making us happy this week!
First up is Jacqueline Carey's new book, Starless. I read it over the weekend and I enjoyed every minute of it! I can't remember the last time something swept me up so quickly and completely - I stayed up too late reading it Friday night! I find I have a difficult time deciding how to rate books like this - it's maybe not even my favourite of hers - but she did a great job with the world building and the story was interesting and compelling enough that I really just wanted to languish with it. While the story was a little straightforward, sitting down with it all weekend was an absolute joy, and I guess that's about as good as it can get. Supposedly it's a one-shot, which I both appreciate a lot and am a little sad about, but it is just a reminder that she's a really great writer, and that she makes really wonderful stories! I really hope she does end up putting out that new Kushiel's Dart re-write...
Next up is something of an odd joy, but a real one nonetheless: I'm really happy about my Evo membership right now! Twice in the past week I've grabbed an Evo to get somewhere quickly, and living on the North Shore means that having the choice to take a car from anywhere is really, really convenient. It often takes 15 minutes to drive somewhere and over an hour to transit, so having access to car-shares is really useful for me. It meant that last night I could transit somewhere right from work without worrying about how long it would take me to get home afterwards, and that's really valuable. I'm glad I have it set up and that I can use it whenever it works. They also gave me ten free minutes for my birthday, so I'm even happier with the cost-effectiveness! It's just a convenient option I'm glad I have available, and it's been making my life easier lately.
And now, what about you? What's making you happy this week?
