Happiness Practice - April 19, 2019
It's time for what's making us happy this week!
In obvious news, I'm very happy about having a long weekend! Somehow three days are so much more valuable than two, and it makes it so much more possible to truly relax and get work off my mind but also get things done around my house and just generally feel better. I can't sleep in much at all these days, so three days in a row of sleeping until around 8 AM will probably help me kick some of this fatigue, and I'll have time to get lots of working out in over the whole weekend. I can kind of make a plan, or even better, not do anything for a few days at a time, and I'm really happy about that.
Next up, some of you will already have heard me talk about Educated, by Tara Westover, but I finished it last weekend and it was definitely one of the best things I've read in a while. It's a story about a woman who was born to religious fundamentalists, off the grid, who didn't have a birth certificate and was "home schooled" with no formal structure but wound up leaving her family and going on to become a scholar. It's an amazing and truly unbelievable story, and she's a great writer - the book encompasses a lot of themes about identity and belief and hope, and it was really interesting and difficult and sad but wonderful. She overcomes a lot, and this is the first book I've read in a long time that did a really good job of helping me understand different perspectives. I would really recommend it to everyone, and I'll be thinking about it for a long time.
Finally, one thing that keeps making me laugh every time I think about it is that the new head of Nintendo of America is named Doug Bowser. Nominative determinism at its best!
And now, what about you? What's making you happy this week?
